biography The underdog city of new haven generated a wealth of over-educated townies. Doug having had his heart broken by rock-n-roll in the past, soaked up the local constellation of pop and art-rock bands, and dreamed wildly in the company of his Galaxie 500 box set. Two ideas for a new band: One, a campy 60's Mod stage show seemed long on humor, short on songs, and yielded more prospective go-go dancers than players. The other idea involved an ethereal pop band with strings. The songs were for the most part written. Sadly, there would be no go-go dancers. Jennifer had decided to walk to work. It was a rare sunny November day in New Haven. It usually rains like a runny nose you have all day long. Nearly run down in an intersection, Jennifer bellowed incriminations at a reckless motorist. A clear demonstration that her voice could project. She may even have given him the swears. She was already dressed like a rock star, so why not ask? Jennifer was well acquainted with the Chapel Hill music scene and the precedent that a woman can be both scientist and musician, so it wasn't much of a stretch. Jennifer now also plays bass as well as singing lead, which continues to astound her band mates. It seems she is a bit of a natural, but she is rather modest about the whole affair.
Netta had been practising all day like many. He left his large room only to rent a video, when he came across the flyer for string players. His original phone presentation was cryptic and reticent. Yes, he did play the violin. No, he had never heard of any of the bands mentioned. He had played union gigs with the likes of Air Supply, ELO and Brian Wilson and seemed generally amicable. He only later revealed that he had been studying violin since an age of five and performed (and sampled ice cream) on most continents of the globe. New York has the best sounding halls and Israel the best Butter Crunch. Cellos players dropped like Spinal Tap drummers until Linnea brought her beloved Beefsteak by bicycle. She made very good pesto and displayed equal love of Bach, Lucas Foss, and Wilco. She once took Jane Scarpatino's name as an e-mail address, but there has been no legal action taken currently. Linnea also plays the tambourine and can create her own genetic strain of fruit flies, but this is rarely a practical task at rehearsal.
Pasquale, Richie, was reluctant at first. Another band? He had been in so many. He was taken with "Bartok" and the opportunity to play in mixed meter. He also found the band's cullinary exploits and proclivity to "sweeting" quite appealing. He had to work it out with the Boss, but it all worked out in the end. A steadier beat, never to be found. The great democracy known as rehearsal takes place in the oldest printing factory in the United States. The large metal presses churn out slow steady rhythms during the day and the Secret Ink take over at night. Sometimes the songs escape the printing factory to be shared with friends new and old. Here's hoping you will be one.
